Reading & Phonics: A Strong Bedtime Routine

A simple method to improve pronunciation, comprehension, and love for books.

Reading & Phonics: A Strong Bedtime Routine

Why bedtime reading works so well

At night, children are calmer. Calm brains absorb language faster—sounds, words, and meaning.

A consistent bedtime routine builds trust and makes reading feel safe and enjoyable.

The 15-minute premium routine

5 minutes phonics: one sound + 3 examples (“s” → sun, sock, sandwich).

8 minutes story: read slowly, point to key words, let the child repeat one sentence.

2 minutes recap: ask one question (“What happened first?”) and praise effort.

Pronunciation without pressure

Model the word once clearly. Avoid repeating “No, wrong” — instead say “Let’s try together.”

Use short playful repetition: whisper voice, robot voice, singing voice (children love it).

If your child doesn’t like books yet

Start with picture books and let the child “read” by describing pictures.

Choose topics they love (animals, vehicles, colors). Motivation is the fastest learning tool.
